Hiryczuk/Van Oevelen - Landfall is a publication based on the temporary art project Landfall in the public space of Amsterdam Zuidas by artist duo Elodie Hiryczuk and Sjoerd van Oevelen, commissioned by the Virtueel Museum Zuidas (VMZ) and supported by the Amsterdams Fonds voor de Kunst. With contributions by the editors Marente Bloemheuvel and Zsa-Zsa Eyck, the artists (works and texts), Mark Kremer, Helga Fassbinder, Gilles Deleuze, 'L'île déserte' (1953) and an introduction by Tom Conley.

The artists conceived the idea of bringing the youngest island in the world – Surtsey off the coast of Iceland – to Zuidas Amsterdam by means of large panoramic photographs. The two land masses are comparable in size, but apart from that, totally different. Surtsey is a spontaneous impulse of nature, accessible only for research. Zuidas is a former marshland changed by human intervention into a business district on the most expensive dirt in the Netherlands. The question is, where can one find real nature? On Surtsey, where the ordinary human presence is taboo? Or in Zuidas, where the city drives out nature?
