Mirages documents the work by Dutch artist Lieven Hendriks over a period of twenty years. In his paintings he gives shape to abstract concepts such as hope, comfort and desire. The manipulation of light always plays an important role in the construction of his works. The painted subjects evoke a field of tension with the historical idea of painting. His paintings thus balance between temporality and eternity, between presence and absence, between truth and deceit.

The book offers a comprehensive overview of the artist’s paintings with texts from Dominic van den Boogerd, Rianne Groen and an interview by Menno Vuister.

Lieven Hendriks (1970) is a visual artist who takes everyday subjects in which human touch is visible as a starting point for his work. By using trompe l’oeil effects, his flat canvases appear as loosely stretched lines, deceiving the eyes of the viewer. In his work, he plays a game with the nature of observation, touching upon the essence of painting and the value attached to it. He graduated from the HKU in Utrecht in 1994 and was a resident at De Ateliers in Amsterdam. His work is part of renowned international collections such as Museum Voorlinden, ESMoA Los Angeles and the Nagoya University of Arts Collection.
